a "poor" American visits Moscow and is humbled

Here's a great article written by an American visiting Moscow to film a documentary about the "New Russia". On her arrival and throughout her stay, she realizes just how much America has lost its standing in the Russian Federation. "During a week spent with multi-millionaires, club kids, publishing tycoons, beauty queens, reformed gangsters and Russia's biggest rap star - I often felt the object of pity and scorn. The American dream? Very yesterday's news here where the smell of well-laundered money - and lots of it - is in the air." To read the article, click here.

Climbing adventure on the Russian-Georgian border

Here's a great article describing a climbing trip on the Russian Georgian border. The authors travel across the Caucasus region, which is between the Black and Caspian seas. They describe their climbs and hikes across this majestic part of Europe, up mountains, through valleys and even the meals. Here's a funny example of their experience - "It was sheep's fat wrapped in sheep's stomach, tied with sinew and boiled until it becomes a gray, wiggly doughnut hole. Vodka washed the first piece down. I wretched at the second and tears poured from my eyes, gag-reflex in full operation, vodka out the nose. Not good."
